A letter to his brother Henry Livingston describing the massacre at Cherry Valley, N.Y. Livingston describes the devastation and cruelty inflicted on the residents by the British forces under John Butler. He also provides an anecdote regarding Joseph Brant, the Indian leader. Livingston states that Brant took no part in the massacre and swore to Butler that he "was an enemy from principle but he would never have a hand in massacering the defenseless inhabitants." Written at Albany, N.Y.

Joseph Brant, also known as Thayendanega, (born March 1743 in Ohio Country along the Cuyahoga River - died Burlington Beach, Upper Canada, November 24, 1807), Mohawk Chief and an officer in the British military during the American Revolutionary War.
